The very thought of Aunt Clara being in charge of this crazy mixed up year just makes me laugh!! Who else grew up watching this show?
As a young adolescent I thought I had hit the jackpot when our cable system finally got the TBS station and we had something more to watch than the three major networks. It was like a dream come true. I can still remember plopping down in my favorite den chair each day with a snack in one hand and the remote to our only tv in the other. I’d sit sideways swinging my legs over one arm as I waited to see what mischief Samantha and her family would get into on that day’s episode.
Aunt Clara was one of Samantha’s most enduring family members even though havoc followed her everywhere she went. No matter how hard she tried, she would inevitably botch every good intentioned spell she cast. She always started out wanting to do something good or right, but she would mess up everytime. Things always seemed to end up out of her control and usually worse than they were before she ever got involved.
Do you ever feel that way in your fitness world? Have you ever started your day or week with good intentions only to have spoiled your plan a few hours or days later? Making healthy changes is hard. We all say someday or tomorrow we will do it but in reality sometimes we don’t even try because we’ve been Aunt Clara way too many times to count. We don’t want to be her again. We don’t like failure and we don’t like losing control. We want to be Samantha and do it right with the first twitch of our nose. But we are only human and we have no nose twitching power.
Let me remind you of what you do have. If you are a child of God, you have the Holy Spirit living within you who empowers you. Remember, self control is a fruit of the Spirit. We might not do a good job with it on our own but that’s just it, we are not on our own! We’ve got help. Keep that in mind the next time you set out with good intentions of making some healthy changes in your life. You’re not alone so don’t go it alone. Make it a matter of prayer and plug into some real power in your life.
Also, if I may give you some practical advice, don’t overwhelm your human self with trying to change everything at once. Pick one thing at a time to work on and celebrate the small victories. It’s ok to start with the easiest thing to change first (like working out at home one day a week with cyber camp or drinking more water). Victories, even easy ones, will help make you hungry for more. Pick one bad habit to break and one good habit to start at a time. Don’t get in a hurry and lean on the Holy Spirit for strength and self control and you’ll be amazed what positive changes will come across your life!!
Just in case anyone is interested, Bewitched happens to be streaming on the ROKU channel now. (Ask me how I know!)
