Dreams -vs- Goals

Dreams

Dreams are hopes, wishes, and visions of an outcome. Dreams can be grand and beautiful and help us to keep our ambition alive. Don’t be afraid to dream and when you dream, by all means, DREAM BIG!! But don’t stop there!! One can dream forever and never take a single step toward that dream becoming a reality. Don’t let that be you! Put action to your dreams by setting goals. Without goals, dreams are just wishful thinking.

Goals

Goals are the steps needed to reach the dream. Goals are specific and measurable. You know when a goal is reached. So many people confuse dreams and goals. Their so-called “goals” are actually just dreams. They are too lofty. They are not specific enough to gage success along the way. Without the success of accomplished smaller goals the dream becomes overwhelming and is often dropped or tabled for later. In essence, the dream just stays a dream.

Let’s imagine you take that dream, your big vision, and you list the steps it would take to get there. List them all. If any of the steps seem overwhelming, break them down even further. You want them in manageable realistic pieces, regardless of how many pieces that means. Now arrange them in the order of the easiest for you to do at this moment in your life to the most difficult. Make sure each one of them is specific, measurable, realistic and action oriented (something you can do and control). I love behavior action goals such as “I will workout for 30 minutes a day at 7:30am on Mon, Wed, & Thur” or “I will drink 64 oz of water every single day.” These are very measurable and very specific. You know if you accomplish it. You either get to check it off your goal list or you don’t.

Once you have your goals listed and in order of difficulty, it is time to start tackling them one or two at a time. This is a journey. Small steps are so much easier than big leaps. Each small victory makes you stronger and helps push you onward to the next more difficult step. You will be conditioning yourself to meet your goals. You will expect to meet them because you have been meeting them on each prior step.

We all have it in us to reach that fitness dream. We just have to convince our mind of that. Right now there is a good possibility that our mind is stuck thinking we can’t because we have dropped our dream in the past. But we no longer live in the past. We now have a new plan. We’re no longer going to be happy just dreaming. We are going to put goals to our dream and action to our goals.

I’m reminded of one of my favorite scriptures. It’s obviously not talking about setting fitness goals. It is talking about the Word of God. But I love the call to action found at its heart. James 1:22 says, “Be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only deceiving your own selves.” In other words, don’t fool yourself into thinking that hearing God’s Word is the same as living out God’s Word.

With this in mind, do not be deceived into thinking that dreaming your dreams is the same as living out your dreams.

Three Key Areas to Address When Planning Your Fitness Goals

  • Nutrition: What current habit do you need to drop that is not serving you nutritionally? What nutrition is lacking in your diet that you need to add in for fuel?
  • Exercise: What is a habit you can add in or take away to improve your daily or weekly movement?
  • Mindset: What current mindset doesn’t improve your life and needs to be adjusted? What is a better mindset that you need to adapt?

Revisit these questions as often as needed. As you meet goals and make positive changes in your life, your next goals may need to be recalibrated. No matter how high you climb there is always a higher bar to reach. 🙂
