Pinktober has been a long standing FollowMeFit October tradition. For years now we’ve worn Pink on Wednesdays and challenged ourselves to do hard things.
But why?
I’d like to tell you it’s because I focus on helping women with their health and fitness so that they can live their best life and that breast cancer awareness is an important part of that. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among US women and is the second leading cause of death among women. I’d like to tell you that I do this because I know exercise, good nutrition, and early detection improves that survival rate. I’d like to tell you that it is something as a woman has always been on my mind. But that’s just not the whole truth.
I do this because the unthinkable touched my family. I got a call one day in 2012 from one of my four sisters. She had found a lump and was going in for a biopsy. As a family we prayed together and assured her it would be nothing, but we were wrong. It was something. She went into surgery for a biopsy and came out with a mastectomy and a diagnosis. Like most families facing the C-word, we were in shock, we were fearful, and we had to lean a lot on God. The next few months of treatments were brutal but she fought like a pro. She is a warrior and we are blessed that she is also a survivor. She has been cancer free now for 9 years!! I praise God for what He did in her life but I also know that the outcome is not the same for everyone. It’s a serious diagnosis and is no respecter of persons.
In 2012 the abstract became real and personal to me. I now make mammograms a priority. I no longer skip them. I remind others to book theirs. I wear pink on October Wednesdays in hopes that it will remind someone to do a self examination. I publicize it in my boot camps to honor survivors, like my sister; and those who won’t quit the fight, like Beverly in my 7:30 crew. I encourage my campers to challenge themselves and give it their best as a memorial to those who lost the fight, like my sister-in-law Janice.
I do this because I’m afraid that it is still abstract to too many women. I do this to raise awareness. No one can prevent breast cancer 100% but there are some things you can do to lower your risk factors and increase your survival rate…
- Get your mammogram (make the appointment today)
- Do regular self examinations
- Be physically active
- Eat nutritious foods
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Limit alcohol
- Breast feed
- Limit hormone therapy
Let’s do the things we can and talk about it to others so they will be aware before it touches their family.
