As I was doing my Bible study this morning, Philippians 3:16 jumped out and spoke to me. Philippians was written by Paul, and in the preceding verses (14-15) he is talking about pursuing the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Jesus. These beautiful verses paint a picture of actively running, striving, and reaching with a definite aim to live and be more like Jesus.
“I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus. Therefore, all who are mature should think this way. And if you think differently about anything, God will reveal this also to you.”
Philippians 3:14-15
Then comes verse 16, which I’m assuming he put in for those of us who might not be as mature as we should be. He knows us pretty well, doesn’t He?
“In any case, we should live up to whatever truth we have attained.”
Philippians 3:16
Let me break down what I heard when I read that: “If you’re not mature, educated, or certain enough to know all the things you need to do, go ahead and do what you know to do until God reveals more that you should do”. In other words, do what you know and do it to the very best of your ability until God gives you something else. You might need to read that again.
I know this verse is talking about our faith and Christian walk but I couldn’t help but see the parallels in our fitness life. So many times we don’t do anything because we are stalled not knowing what to do. There are so many debates between fitness professionals on the right and wrong diet methods and forms of exercise. It can become overwhelming and confusing. For many, the fear of messing up and getting it wrong makes it easier to just do nothing.
Here’s my advice: Start simple. Do what you know is right until you learn more. Use the “fake it till you make it” mindset until you get in tune with your body to see what works for you. Everyone’s body is different and there is no one specific way to lose weight or get fit. Do the basics first. No one is disputing the fact that we have to get our sleep, drink our water, eat more nutritious food, and move our body. These are the basics that we all know. Put those on your to do list first and then go from there.
Stop stalling and start living what you know!
