Foundations

We all know a good foundation makes all the difference in the quality of the build. Even Jesus talks about it …

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock.  The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock.

Matthew 7:24-25

We are all familiar with the rest of the story and most of us can even sing about when the rains came down and the floods came up.

Tell the truth your mind just repeated that sentence two more times!!

You also know that the house upon the rock stood firm while the house upon the weaker foundation, the sand, went splat. In this parable Jesus was clear that He and His Words are the foundation of our faith. Those that listen, know, and act on His words are building on the right foundation.

Sometimes other foundations may not be so clear. They may even be overwhelming or confusing. Let me help you sift through the information overload in the exercise and fitness world and share with you about building on, what I believe, to be the right fitness foundation.

Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an athlete, your overall strength and stamina is either accelerated or held back by the strength of your core. It is your foundation. A strong core muscle group (which includes the muscles of the abdomen, the back, the hips, and the trunk in general) can make or break your fitness efforts. The core gives stability for the body as it moves. It helps you to stand up, turn, twist, and reach. It is responsible for your posture that helps you sit and stand erect. Unfortunately, due to office jobs, long commutes, and Netflix; we sit too much. This weakens our core and a weak core can cause slouching, slumping, and even back pain.

Our bodies are made to move and the core is at the base of each movement. The core must be engaged and able to hold itself properly for us to be able to enjoy other exercises and daily functional activities such as lifting, bending, housework, childcare, and gardening safely.

This is why I am starting a weekly video series on foundational exercises. They will all be free to the public and found on my Follow Me Fit YouTube channel. Each short video lasting only a couple of minutes will explain and demonstrate an exercise designed to help strengthen your core. I will give starting modifications as well as more advanced versions. I encourage you to be on the lookout each week over the next several weeks for the newest video and to start incorporating these foundational core exercises into your daily routine.

My first video in the series is the king of all core exercises: The Plank
