Purse Snacks

I don’t always carry a purse but when I do it’s usually because there are snacks in it!

Shelley

I don’t even relate to people who say they haven’t eaten since yesterday or even since breakfast. I never miss a meal and even then it seems I am always hungry. I am either eating or thinking about what I’m going to eat next!!  That’s just the way I am wired.

Because I am a firm believer in steady fuel (nutritious food) and movement (exercise and an active life) to keep the body’s engine running, I do eat on a regular schedule and I include snacks.  I believe fuel and movement go hand in hand to keep the metabolism firing – energy in and energy out. But I also know that sometimes snacking can be difficult, especially when we’re on the go.

Have you ever struck out to run a few errands expecting to be back by meal time? You were fine when you left the house but somewhere along the way you became hungry, I mean really hungry as in … starving almost unto death. Your stomach was growling in protest of this recent 3 hour fast you had placed upon it and your insides were probably going to have to eat themselves like cannibals. You could actually feel the energy draining from your body like a vampire running from the sun. You then began driving a little too fast (or even recklessly) in order to speed up the errand process so you could get back to food which was all your mind could think about. You got short tempered and “hangry” with the sales clerk, your kids, the guy who cut you off in traffic, and anyone else that happened to be in range.  It was an afternoon of complete misery and famine…  OK, so maybe I’m being overly dramatic, but I’m trying to make a point. Situations like this can be easily avoided with a few purse snacks tucked away in case of emergency.

Here are some of my favorite purse friendly snacks:

  • dry cereal or granola
  • trail mix (see below for my personal recipe)
  • oranges, cuties, or any fruit with a rind
  • vacuumed packed turkey snack sticks (nutrition varies by brand so read the label for fat and calories)
  • nuts and seeds
  • small apple or celery sticks with a condiment cup of peanut butter (use a craft stick as a disposable knife)
  • whole grain crackers or mini rice cakes

What are your favorite purse snacks?

Trail Mix

  • 1 TBS Dried Cherries
  • 1 TBS Cashews
  • 1 TBS Almonds
  • 1 TBS Walnuts
  • 9 Chocolate chips

Measure out the ingredients above and place in a snack bag or small container. This makes one serving (about 1/4c) and is approximately 200 calories. Make several baggies while you are making so you’ll have plenty on hand to grab and go. You can obviously tweek the ingredients to your taste. Just be sure to watch the calorie count and keep the portion size to about a 1/4 cup.
