Where Do We Go From Here?

Our BASIC-5 Challenge last month was a huge success in that all of us who participated (regardless of our final score) stretched ourselves in one area or another.  It was only 5 basic-healthy habits for only 5 days, but it was not as easy as we had thought it would be.  I want to share a few reflections from the experience in hopes that it will help all of us in moving forward.

Lessons Learned:

Life Happens

Sometimes even the best laid plans get interrupted and have to be delayed.  That is life.  There is no need to beat ourselves up over it.  We simply have to keep moving forward and try not to stay derailed any longer than necessary.

Weaknesses Show Up

Just because we set out with a determined plan, doesn’t mean our weaknesses go away.  As a matter of fact, they show up everyday just to taunt us.  Hopefully the challenge taught us a little about which weaknesses have a stronger pull and need to be dealt with a little more intentionally and sternly.

Friends Help

Many challengers told me how helpful it was to know that we were all in this together.  It’s good to have a support system when trying to develop new habits.  We are not designed to do life alone.

Healthy Feels Better

While healthy choices aren’t always easy and sometimes make us feel deprived, healthy does feel better in the long run.  Many challengers commented on how alert and energized they felt during the challenge instead of sluggish and tired.

It’s Not All or Nothing

The fit lifestyle is all about balance.  We do not have to be all in to see and feel results!!  And we certainly shouldn’t give up and throw in the towel on everything just because we’re struggling in one area or one day.

We Can Make Time

With a little forethought and planning, it doesn’t really take that much time to make healthier choices.  Read those keywords again: forethought and planning.

Guilt Doesn’t Belong Here

We do not have to feel guilty about prioritizing our health as long as we keep a good balance in mind.  We obviously can’t ignore the needs of our loved ones while completely focusing on our own.  That would produce guilt in the other direction.  So, we need to do what we can for our health in the season we’re in by navigating around our responsibilities and lose the guilt altogether.  Guilt does nothing but produce stress and that does not belong in a healthy lifestyle.

So What’s Next?

Select 1-2 Areas to Work on at a Time

That doesn’t mean to tackle the hardest ones first.  Sometimes it’s better to conquer the easier ones first.  That will give you a sense of accomplishment and help give you the strength to deal with the next level.

Set Specific Personal Goals

Try making your own customizable checklist or scorecard.  It can even change as your goals change.  I have even made you a printable blank score sheet (like the one we used in the challenge) that you can fill in for yourself.

Join Friends on the Journey

Life is easier with friends – whether in person or through social media.  To help with this, I have decided to keep our challenge FaceBook Group open and just roll it over to a followmefit group.  I’m hoping we can use this private space to share ideas, challenge, and encourage each other in our fitness journey.  To encourage sharing within our comfort zone, I am keeping it to females only.  Any of my, or your, female friends are welcome to join if they are interested and can opt out at any time.  Feel free to invite those you think would be interested.
