What happens when you focus on nutrition for 3 weeks?
It had been one of those hectic, on-the-go weeks. You know how they go. They are simply crazy with no time to think or plan and you just end up eating whatever you can find in order to survive. It was in the aftermath of one of those weeks that I woke up feeling blah, unmotivated, and more than a little gross inside. The spring-like weather and beautiful sunshine just had me feeling and craving fresh. I decided that I was going to intentionally fill my body to the brim with some much needed love and nutrition that day. I bought so many fruits and veggies at the supermarket (see pic) I had no choice but to continue on my quest for nutrition for longer than just one day. I didn’t think I would be able to even come close to eating it all before it rotted. Challenge accepted and goal met.
Here I am 3 plus weeks later still pumping in the nutrition and feeling great!!
Here’s what I’ve noticed so far:
- I have energy!! I’m not as sluggish or tired when I wake up or in the afternoons.
- My mind feels sharper. I feel a lot more alert and less “cloudy”.
- I have less bloating and puffiness.
- My skin, nails, and hair look and feel healthier.
- My clothes fit a little looser.
After doing a little research, here’s what I can expect over the long haul if I continue:
- A lower risk of diabetes and heart disease
- Weight loss
- Less chronic inflammation that will make me feel lighter, brighter, and happier
- Glowing skin
- Less sickness
- Better breath and healthier teeth
- Better sleep
- Slower Aging — sign me up!!
This is something I wanted to do to make me feel better. It is not a diet and there are no hard fast rules of foods I can not have. There has been no issue with deprivation nor have I felt no need to step on the scale. My focus is simply on nutrition and feeling better.
If you’re interested, I’ve tried to put my non-plan into words:
- Less junk (i.e. sugar & processed food) to make room for the nutrition
- Lots of water
- Lots of fresh fruit & veggies (eaten raw as often as possible – stir fried, grilled, baked, or roasted is also good)
- Whole foods or grains for my complex carbs (oatmeal for breakfast and the following as needed in small portions at different meal times: whole grain bread, non-instant converted or brown rice, white or sweet potatoes with little to no butter or sour cream)
- A lean protein source at every meal (chicken, chicken, and more chicken, along with a little fish, and lean beef & pork – all broiled, baked, air fried, or grilled)
- A lean protein source at snack time (whey protein shake, greek yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, deli turkey, or turkey jerky — most of these accompany fresh fruits or veggies, as well)
I’m trying to keep fresh veggies cut up and ready to eat with my lunch instead of chips (a little ranch dressing dip is totally ok). I keep fresh fruit to eat when I need something sweet. I know fruit is high in natural sugar, but it is still better than actual sugar and it does satisfy the sweet tooth while pumping up the vitamins. I’m trying to keep portions to their proper size so I don’t feel overstuffed or bloated. I try to eat a salad for dinner, with a good source of at least 4-5 oz of lean protein, a few times a week.
That’s pretty much it. I’d love for you to give it a go with me and let me know how it goes.
