Summer Vacation & Fitness Goals

Summer vacation season is here!!

If I had any summer advice to give you, it would be to remind you that your week away from the norm is not the time to make huge strides towards your fitness goals.  Giving your body and mind a rest is the very definition of a vacation.  Don’t get caught up in feeling guilty for skipping workouts and eating a few treats along the way!  While a vacation is not the time to make progress in your fitness journey, we also don’t want to completely derail the train.  Here are a few low stress tips that may help keep that from happening…

  1. Take some healthy snacks for the trip!!  Convenience stores are not known for their healthy options.
  2. Consider limiting your restaurant meals and purchasing some easy and healthy food at a local grocery store for your breakfasts and/or lunches.
  3. When visiting a restaurant, look up the menu online ahead of time so you can pick out some of the healthier options before you’re starving.
  4. If you have your heart set on an unhealthy option, get it!  And then balance the meal with some healthy sides.  This will help not only the overall calorie count, but also your energy level and mood in the hours following.
  5. Stay hydrated, especially in this summer heat.  Sometimes thirst tricks us into thinking we’re hungry or has us craving sugary drinks.  Stay ahead of the game by drinking plenty of water before you’re parched.
  6. Plan on moving your body.  Walking is a great vacation movement.  Walk on the beach, take a hike in nature, park the car and explore mainstreet on foot, visit a park, or walk to the restaurant.  Ride a bike.  Play frisbee or volleyball on the beach.
  7. Take GOfit with you and plan on doing a short band or bodyweight workout one or two days while you’re gone.  I’ll make sure you have a couple in your playlist.

Most of all, enjoy your vacation!!
