Spring

March happens to be one of my favorite months of the year!!  It’s that transition month that ushers in longer days, new life, and the warmer weather of spring.  It’s a great season of rebirth and renewal.  It is the perfect time to not only do some home spring cleaning and closet purging, but to also toss some unhealthy winter habits (like too much sitting and not enough movement) that may be cluttering your mental space.

You can almost hear spring’s warmer weather and colorful beauty just begging you to come outside to play!  It’s the perfect time to add some outdoor movement into your exercise routine.  Try walking, jogging, hiking, biking, gardening, golf, or just move your yoga mat to the patio.  Outdoor exercise releases endorphins and can actually help lower your stress level and your blood pressure.  It is said that those who exercise outdoors spend more time doing it than those who exercise indoors. Let’s face it, the outdoor change up is just more fun!  Nothing makes you feel more childlike than being outdoors.

If you’re not sure what to do outside, walking is a great place to start!  If you haven’t been moving most of the winter, plan on starting with 15 minutes five days a week for the first week or so.  Start each walk with a 5 minute warm up at a slow pace, then increase to a brisk pace that gets your heart pumping for the next 5 minutes, and then finish with a 5 minute cool down back to your slower pace.  When you get ready to increase your time, just simply increase the time spent at the brisk pace.  It’s totally okay to alternate brisk and slow walking.  You can let your heart rate, breathing, or how hard you feel you’re working dictate when to slow down and when to speed up.  The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week so make that your ultimate goal to build up to over a course of time.  If you started now and added 2-3 minutes a week to your walking time, you’d build up to the AHA goal by the end of spring.  Just don’t forget to make a back up plan!  Spring weather is unpredictable so don’t put all your Easter eggs in that weather basket or your new habit will die before it gets started.  FYI: The Family Life Center in Clarksville has a $10/mo indoor walking pass option and yours truly, your lovable trainer, has On-Demand videos available for use anywhere you have an internet connection (see below). You are without excuses for a plan or a back up plan. Winter hibernation is over.

Let’s get outside and play!!
